Explaining Class of Service and Quality of Service

Thursday, February 07, 2013

Murray Goodman:Do you sometimes feel you’re speaking a different language to your colleagues? When it comes to the topics of Class of Service (CoS) and Quality of Service (QoS) I’m often left dumbfounded that there is so much confusion around these terms. Although I must confess, I too have had my own views that turned out not to be entirely correct – particularly how they relate or work together. Over time these definitions seem to have become more blurred and are now often used interchangeably.

VoIP: the business standard, not a future technology

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Murray Goodman: Voice over IP or VoIP has had a bit of a bad rap. Firstly people use terms like IP Telephony, VoIP and Voice over the Internet interchangeably. In my mind there are distinct differences.

Why more bandwidth isn’t always the answer

Thursday, November 22, 2012

Murray Goodman: It’s the age-old solution to a never-ending problem. As the bandwidth of the network is limited it slows almost to a grinding halt, the shout goes out –“increase the bandwidth”. But this is simply sticking a plaster over a festering wound that just refuses to heal.

UFB at home: The UFB Speed Trap

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Murray Goodman: I recently talked about my experience of getting a UFB service at home. It generated a bit of interest and debate, mainly around why I was only getting 18Mbps download on a 30Mbps fibre service. I even got a call from Crown Fibre Holdings asking what was going on.

I’ve got UFB! My experience with UFB at home.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Murray Goodman: I’m told I am one of the first few hundred people in New Zealand to get UFB. Pretty exciting stuff right? The guys in the office know what it’s all about, so the first question they asked was “what are my download speeds like?” My vet as it turns out is a Gamer and does a lot of FTP traffic so when it came up in conversation last week he was very knowledgeable – it’s all about latency and upload speed for him. My wife, the neighbours and most of my friends were less enthusiastic and the common theme was “what’s UFB?”

5 ways that Lync makes ‘work anywhere’ a reality

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Regan Hughes: Just as the iPhone finally provided a phone that could do pretty much everything I wanted it to do, Lync has provided a tool that has allowed me to genuinely work anywhere in a way that is seamless to the rest of the business. Working anywhere has a number of benefits, including being able to spend time out of the office occasionally to focus on a specific project as well as being able to stay involved in important issues and meetings while on the road.

5 ways Evernote can change the way you work

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Regan Hughes: I’ve been toying with Evernote (tagline ‘Remember Everything') for 3 years as a place to store a few notes. After reading Getting Things Done I’ve found that it’s a lot more useful than a simple note capturer – I’ve even spent hard cash upgrading from the free license to premium to enjoy the benefits of speedy searching through pictures and PDFs. Here are 5 ways it could change the way you work.

Getting things done – Remember the Milk

Friday, May 04, 2012

Regan Hughes: My last blog was about Getting Things Done (GTD), in this post, I plan to outline the core of my implementation of GTD. This central nervous system is a piece of software called Remember the Milk (RTM) – which is essentially a simple and elegant list management tool.

Getting Things Done – Stress free productivity for IT professionals

Thursday, April 19, 2012

Regan Hughes: I think IT professionals share a few common traits. We usually have more things to do than we care to think about, we’re knowledge workers, and we like shortcuts and good tools. With the season of long weekends upon us, shorter weeks seem to amplify the affects of being pushed for time, with wall-to-wall meetings and little time to capture actions, let alone do them. Just before Easter I stumbled upon an idea called Getting Things Done (GTD), and read the same book by David Allen, which lead to a little revelation.
