In the wake of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Christchurch and surrounding districts this morning, communication infrastructure is being stretched to capacity with residents being asked to keep phone communications for emergency use only.
While Kordia is supporting its broadcast and telecommunications customers to keep critical systems working and provide assistance where needed, today’s earthquake highlights the need for a communication alternative that is fit for purpose and doesn’t rely on the localised infrastructure used for consumer services.
“In emergency situations, telecommunications infrastructure can be destabilised or easily overloaded,” says Drew Gilpin, Kordia’s GM of Sales & Marketing.
“While those services are being restored, the very real need for a device that enables easy team communications, and is not inhibited by operational outages, is paramount.
“Kordia’s infrastructure provides a two-way digital radio network, branded KorKor, that takes communications to a new level, providing reliable communication capacity and the ability to coordinate and track large response teams in an emergency situation.”
The KorKor network shares the same ‘lifeline’ infrastructure owned and operated by Kordia. Unaffected by the emergency in Christchurch, it is this infrastructure that is delivering broadcast and telecommunications services in the region.
Via a single in-vehicle or portable device, team conversations are possible through KorKor’s group calling function. The announcement feature can also be used to broadcast key tactical information to all users simultaneously.
Combined with the ability to GPS track emergency workers, group texting for immediate status updates, and emergency help one-push button activation, KorKor is designed to optimise field staff support and coordination.
“KorKor was designed to be used in emergency situations such as this,” says Gilpin. “The same technology is deployed in over 100 countries for that very reason. Not impacted by mobile outages or connectivity issues, it is a business critical network robust enough to maintain communication continuity.”
Councils in other areas of New Zealand are already using KorKor on a daily basis as the preferred communications tool for field staff. The key benefit is that in the event of an emergency most Council staff will have access to KorKor radios, be familiar with how to operate them and can be confident that the devices will work.
This is a network device that Kordia will be offering emergency services and support staff in Christchurch, says Gilpin:
“It is already being effectively used by Kordia to coordinate its own field staff, enabling swift response to request from customers for assistance.”
