Wellington International Airport

The team at Wellington International Airport Limited (WIAL) has been using Kordia’s new integrated two-way radio communication system for its Airport Fire Service, Airside Operations and Terminal Services since January 2010.

Chosen because of WIAL’s statutory requirements to have dedicated two-way communications available in emergencies, KorKor has also been chosen as the key communication device for day-to-day operations.

In January, WIAL switched from its heritage analogue system to digital.

“WIAL identified a significant schism between today’s requirements and their existing analogue solution,” says Mark Janor, Account Director for Kordia. ”Interoperability was an issue, as were multiple repeaters and channels.”

This resulted in a RFP which was won by KorKor, Kordia’s two-way digital radio network. Incorporating the functionality of a cell phone (including mobile phone calling and texting) with two-way radio features, KorKor also has a GPS fleet tracking system.

Both in-vehicle and handheld devices are now used to support WIAL’s Airport Fire Service, Airside Operations, and Terminal Services.

“We completed installation between January and February this year,” says Janor. “Thirty two active radios were deployed—12 of these with GPS capability.”

Separate talk groups now provide WIAL with 100% privacy and no limit on assigned mobile radios. Designed to optimise job planning and field staff support, KorKor’s radio devices also  provide one-push emergency alert activation.

KorKor radios also play a key role in WIAL’s emergency system response.

“When an incident requires emergency system activation, the alarm goes out from the tower, and alerts everybody on the KorKor network simultaneously. An automatic ‘switch off’ is triggered. Roller doors go up. Current radio channels are cleared. And WIAL is set to effectively manage the emergency at hand.”

Setting a new standard in fully-integrated, business critical digital two-way radio, KorKor is proving to be the solution of choice for businesses that need the best.
