NETWORK IN A CONTAINER

Internet breaks down barriers with Cambium’s PMP320

With the help of the technology of Cambium’s PMP320, we were able to utilise our own unique transportable wireless access point to bring internet access to people living in one of the remotest parts of the entire planet.

Problem

With more than 800 languages officially recognised among its seven million people, Papua New Guinea has some of the most difficult geographical and challenging weather conditions anywhere on earth. Approximately 80% of its population live in remote villages with no road access. Tabubil lies to the North West, is surrounded by virtually impenetrable jungle and experiences some of the heaviest rainfall recorded anywhere (over eight metres each year).

The challenge was to not just to deliver the Internet to Tabubil, but also improve the town’s infrastructure to help local students with their education. Kordia, was faced with an enormous challenge and one that drew upon its 60-year heritage in both broadcast and telecommunications.

Solution

The solution was KorPower – a totally unique transportable wireless transmission system, providing off the grid power which in turn provides WiMAX, WiFi, GSM or other platforms. And at its very heart is the Cambium PMP320, bringing a cost-effective, licensed spectrum, outdoor wireless broadband access network solution. Its industry standard WiMAX 802.16e interoperability enabled connectivity for reliable data, voice and video applications and was ideally suited to the KorPower development.

The KorPower unit was made specifically for the Papua New Guinea Sustainable Development Programme, as the local management looked for a solution to bring to Tabubil. At around NZ$100k complete with building, delivery and installation, KorPower proved a reliable and robust option to deliver a high speed network.

"This WiMAX deployment in Papua New Guinea has the potential to make a real difference – especially in areas such as education, which has been historically difficult to develop due to the sheer geographical challenges involved,” said Mike Mullis, Business Development Manager – South Pacific, Kordia Limited.

Benefits

Cambium’s Point-to-Multipoint PMP320 has played a significant role in Kordia’s highly successful installation. The solution is already making a massive difference in Tabubil – enabling many people to join the world of the internet for the first time, while also allowing its student population to maximise on their potential.
