Next-Generation Mobile Connectivity for ANZ Centre, Auckland
The challenge
The ANZ Centre, formerly known as the Robert Jones Tower and the Coopers & Lybrand Tower, has been one of Auckland’s premier office spaces since its completion in 1991. At the time of construction, mobile technology was in its infancy – 4G and 5G were still decades away. Fast forward to today, and mobile connectivity is an essential part of doing business.
The 42 floor building, 32 tenanted floors and a public carpark, faced significant connectivity challenges:
- Inconsistent 4G and 5G coverage throughout office levels, making calls and data unreliable.
- No coverage in the carpark, posing potential health & safety risks for tenants and visitors.
- Fragmented solutions – while some tenants had installed their own small-scale systems, coverage across other floors was patchy at best.
The solution
ANZ Centre’s property manager, CBRE, knew that tenants needed seamless, building-wide coverage to stay connected, safe, and productive.
With extensive experience working alongside New Zealand’s major mobile network operators, Kordia was enlisted by CBRE to design and deliver a bespoke Distributed Antenna System (DAS) that could bring reliable 4G and 5G connectivity to every corner of the building.
The solution included:
- A hybrid DAS, using a combination of fibre and coaxial cabling, enabling seamless coverage across all 32 tenanted floors and the carpark levels.
- Passive antennas, strategically placed to ensure consistent mobile coverage across office spaces and into traditionally challenging areas like the lfits and underground carparks.
- A collaborative design and approval process with all major telcos, ensuring the system delivered full multi-carrier coverage.
- A complex nine-month retrofit installation carried out within a live, fully tenanted building – carefully planned to minimise disruption.
With the completion of the DAS, for the first time since its construction the ANZ Centre now enjoys full mobile coverage for all tenants and even inside lifts. Tenants and visitors alike benefit from seamless 4G and 5G connectivity, improving productivity, safety, and day-to-day convenience.
