Live event linking in action
From major sporting fixtures to cultural events and company AGMs
Live linking is a versatile solution for broadcasting your event’s footage to any audience, anywhere in the world. Backed by fibre and satellite connectivity, broadcasters and production companies rely on live linking to stream high-quality content with low latency. When the stakes are high, live linking delivers – as demonstrated by the below events that Kordia has partnered with.
Repco NextGen NZ Championship
Kordia worked with Broadcast NextGen NZ to deliver broadcast footage of the Repco NextGen NZ Championship, a major motorsport event with many complex technical requirements.
The main challenge lay in the sheer volume of activity and the need to broadcast content simultaneously to multiple destinations. The championship comprised six events spread across both the North and South Islands (Hampton Downs, Taupo, Cromwell, Manawatu, and Invercargill).
The main broadcast was sent via a Kordia Satellite News Gathering (SNG) van to Sky NZ, who also relayed the footage to Fox Sports Australia. The signal was also streamed live to 7plus in Australia, YouTube, Grabyo, Motorsport.tv, the Supercars website, and several partner websites and platforms including Repco, Toyota, and NextGen.
Special technical requirements, such as a separate Ultra-HD licence (needed for UHD broadcast) and incorporating SCTE triggers (to enable ad breaks in the footage) added another layer of complexity.
The broadcast of the event was a success, with all channels carrying the same, broadcast-grade pictures at the same time, with no delay.
Matariki
Kahawai Productions has trusted Kordia over many years to broadcast its Matariki dawn celebrations – including from remote locations where connectivity is a challenge, such as Coronet Peak (2025) and Wanaka / Treble Cone (2024).
In locations such as these, where fibre infrastructure is unavailable, live linking relies on satellite coverage. For the 2024 celebrations, Kordia deployed two SNG vans to ensure reliable, seamless coverage and backup options in the case of disrupted coverage. One SNG van was based at the Glendhu Bay Lookout, with the other at the Treble Cone ski field.
The SNGs broadcast the footage from two sources (video from fixed cameras as well as a drone), linking the programme to TVNZ, Warner Brothers Discovery, Sky, and Whakaata Māori. Footage was also streamed to Stuff, Matariki.net, iwi radio, and Radio New Zealand – ensuring seamless coverage on a wide range of broadcast and digital platforms, despite the remoteness of the event’s location.
