Maritime Operations Centre: Casting a wide net

In New Zealand, Safety of Life at Sea (or SOLAS) monitoring responsibility sits within the Maritime Operations Centre.

Responsible for the NAVAREA XIV area, the MOC is charged with receiving and responding to contact received from vessels within a pre-defined area that stretches:

  • From the equator to the South Pole

  • half way across the Tasman Sea,

  • and halfway towards South America.

This is a vast body of water; an area making up 12.5% of the earth’s total water surfaces and equating to 50-million square kilometers.
