Creating a sustainable business

Achieving our ambition of Zero Waste and Zero Harm to the environment.

Kordia Sustainibility 12-min

Kordia has sustainability as a core focus of our business

Kordia is a New Zealand owned and operated business. The natural environment of Aotearoa plays an integral part of Kordia’s history, our operations and our future.

Our network extends the length and breadth of this country. From Ahipara in the North to Hedgehope in the South, Mt Taranaki in the West and Whakapunake in the East, our people work all over New Zealand to maintain our sites and services for our communities. And on the sea, our Maritime Operations Centres keep mariners safe from harm.

We’re conscious of the impact we have on the environment and the wider community – that’s why looking after our natural resources is important to us. We see ourselves as the kaitiaki of the network, land, sea and air that we operate in.

Carbon neutrality by 2026

Reducing our carbon emissions is one of our core initiatives, and we’ve been measuring our baseline emissions analysis of Scope 1 and 2 emissions. This allows us to implement strategies to reduce our carbon footprint year on year, with a goal of achieving carbon neutrality by FY26.

We’re also implementing practices to reduce, reuse and recycle our assets – like recycling site batteries and excess structural material used in our towers, as well as designated organic waste and recycling bins in our offices.

Renewable energy

As part of our initiative to look for cleaner and greener ways of producing electricity, Kordia has been exploring solar energy as a more sustainable way of powering our sites. We implemented solar at our Cloud Hill site, near Twizel, and we’re already exploring other sites to convert to solar, as a way for Kordia to reduce both our power consumption and our carbon emissions.

From 1 April, 2022, Kordia has utilised Meridian’s 100% Certified Renewable Energy product for its NZ operations. This move sees Kordia purchase renewable energy certificates to verify that the amount of electricity used throughout our operations from the national grid is matched on an annual basis with electricity produced from Meridian’s certified hydro stations and wind farms.
